Overview

Define what you need to understand.

Understanding an existing concrete structure often means bringing several observations together. The condition of the surface, reinforcement information, test results and available project records can each contribute to the assessment.

We discuss the question you need answered before agreeing a test scope. Depending on that scope, non-destructive methods may be considered alongside sampling or other investigations. The findings need to be interpreted in the context of the structure and the limitations of the selected methods.

Scope to discuss

Tests and investigations.

The selection is project-specific. Do not treat a single result as a complete statement of structural adequacy, or assume every investigation listed here is non-destructive.

Concrete condition and reinforcement

  • Rebound hammer testing
  • Ultrasonic pulse velocity testing
  • Half-cell potential testing
  • Concrete resistivity testing
  • Carbonation testing
  • Rebar mapping and cover-depth assessment

Related concrete and structural investigations

  • Concrete core testing
  • Pull-out testing
  • Slab load testing

Core sampling and pull-out testing involve local intervention. Slab load testing is a separate structural assessment requiring its own agreed preparation and loading scope.

Specialist methods to discuss

  • CAPO testing
  • Thermal scanning
  • Vibration analysis

CAPO also involves local intervention to the concrete. Method suitability, access and specialist availability are confirmed before these investigations are agreed.

Where it is used

Put the investigation in context.

  • Condition investigations for existing concrete buildings and infrastructure
  • Assessment of reinforcement location and cover before further work
  • Investigations prompted by observed deterioration or quality concerns
  • Input to a broader review by the project's structural consultant

Questions before you enquire

A little more clarity.

These answers are a starting point. The scope of an assignment is agreed around your project.

Is every concrete test non-destructive?

No. Methods such as rebar mapping can be considered alongside investigations that involve local intervention, including coring, pull-out and CAPO. We distinguish the proposed methods and discuss their implications before work is agreed.

Can one NDT result confirm the strength or safety of a structure?

A single result should not be used as a complete structural assessment. The testing objective, method limitations, available records and other relevant evidence need to be considered by the project team.

How are the test locations selected?

Locations depend on the investigation objective, accessible areas, structural information and site constraints. We discuss these before defining a suitable scope rather than applying the same layout to every structure.

What information should I provide for an enquiry?

Start with the site location, structure type, current concern and any access or sampling restrictions. Existing drawings and reports can be discussed during the follow-up conversation.

Your site. Your requirements.

Let’s discuss the scope for your project.

We discuss assignments across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat.

Site access, scheduling, method suitability and availability are confirmed for the agreed work.
